Japanese go for Americans a lot because they (Americans) are said to have a "woman first" mentality, and treat them well whereas Japanese men are often seen as unromantic and wanting the wife to give up her career and become a housewife. Money isn't the motivation these days, as Japanese women are becoming more and more careerist and now want to marry out of companionship, not financial necessity.

As for poor Filipinas who are told by their parents to find and meet and American man...yeah, they just want a green card and money. It happens.
