Question:

Do little boys still like trains?

When I was a small boy I used to be fascinated by trains. It seemed that all boys used to be fascinated by trains as well. I used to want to grow up to be a train conductor. Is this still the case among little boys or do other things make them excited nowadays?

  1. I was surprised when I built a small HO train layout for my 7 year old son about 11 years ago - he played with it maybe 10 times over the next five years or so.    In fact, his visiting friends played with it more than he did.

So I'd say it may depend on the child.   Maybe if I started him earlier he'd have been more fascinated and maybe it would've stuck.

  2. Yes - and so do their daddies and even some mommies. My family belongs to a local live steam club, even though we do not own any locomotives or rolling stock. My love of trains started when I had a Southern Pacific rail line that ran through my front yard - the train ran twice a day, and I learned numbers by counting the cars. My wife's began when I took her on her first train ride. Our son had no choice - love trains or be put up for adoption! (Just kidding!!!!)

  3. Yesh. They are. Its the cutest thing.

  4. i do i do

yeah we still have a lot of little kids waving and waving at trains whenever we go by.

maybe not as many as in yesteryear

    but they still do :-)

one of the best parts of railroading is waving at little kids and pretty women lol

  5. They do, and it's amazing to me.  A lot of boys like toy trains before they've ever seen a real train.

When my own son was small, I observed something in him that made me remember how I felt when I was a boy.  It turns out it's the way trains move that we like.  The motion of a train is bit more complicated and graceful than something like a toy car.

  6. Trucks, trains, and construction vehicles in general are very popular among kids.

  7. I suffer the same affliction but it has never gone away. I started with a Lionel at Christmas, and now I love to visit the local RR museum. Nothing beats live steam and polished,  behemoth engine displays.

Of course, my eldest son is not interested in trains. He's studying Fire Technology and wants to be a fireman.

    I'm cool with that.

  8. Yes and amazingly, so do some little girls. Whether it's the colors, the motion or being able to control some little part of their world. Trains still hold fascination and imagination, even in this electronic age. Model railroading the hobby that lasts a life time.
