Question:

Do vegans eat dairy?

Someone asked a question recently asking for best vegan recipes. I gave my recipe for broiled marinated Portabella mushrooms, but the answer that got best answer involved cheese. I am not a vegetarian, (although I do cook meatless meals 3 times a week) but I was under the impression that "vegan" meant no animal products to include dairy (ie cheese). Am I wrong? Do I need to update my definition of vegan?

maybe they figured they would just substitute their own cheese into your recipe.

  3. They do not eat dairy.

  7. Yes.

  8. Two days ago, I decided I want to be a vegan.

after reading about what is happening in the egg factories.

  9. nope. they dont eat anything that came from an animal.

  10. vegans don't use any animal products of any kind.

    I myself am not vegan,

but have practiced lacto-ovotarianism  (vegetarian who eats eggs and drinks milk)

  11. Nothing animal-related. Imagine a world without animals..... that's how they eat.

  12. Vegan no dairy, vegetarian yes dairy

  13. No, you are right. Vegans don't eat or use any animal products or animal byproducts--including things like honey, beeswax and silk. Vegetarians don't eat meat but do use dairy and eggs. That's my understanding, anyway.

  14. I hope they were using soy cheese, since vegens don't eat dairy.

BTW: no one moderates Yahoo Answers forums, so often the best answer isn't the best answer.

  15. I'm pretty sure vegetarians eat no meat but still have dairy, and vegans eat no animal products at all.

  16. No they don't eat anything that comes from animals. Like they won't even eat cookies becasue they have animal fat in them (shortening) They eat things like veggies and bagles with peanut butter on them or bagles with spagheti sauce.

No animal producs, no cheese, no cake, (eggs in it), Most of them are crazy strict about it.

  17. Cheese can be a good source or protein. The key is to get cheese which has more protein than fat. This is considered healthy eating. Pass on the other trends, unless you are just working hard to get attention to yourself for your diet.

  18. NO.

People are the only animals that drink the milk of the mother of another species. All other animals stop drinking milk altogether after weaning. It is unnatural for a dog to nurse from a mother giraffe; it is just as unnatural for a human being

to drink the milk of a cow.

“Vegetarian” is defined as avoiding all animal flesh, including fish and poultry. Vegetarians who avoid flesh, but do eat animal products such as cheese, milk, and eggs, are ovo-lacto-vegetarians (ovo = egg; lacto = milk, cheese, etc.). The ranks of those who eschew all animal products are rapidly growing; these people are referred to as pure vegetarians or vegans. Scientific research shows that lacto-ovo-vegetarians are healthier than meat-eaters, and vegans are the healthiest overall.

  21. No, they don't.

  22. no because it's from a cow you're right

there are alot of idiots out there who like to argue and say vege and vegan are the same they're not

Did you know you are the second 'Michael H' on this forum? Seems to be a common name.

I looked at the question (cheese fondue?). It looks like the asker of that question is confused about the difference between veganism and vegetarianism.

  25. veganism is generally a lifestyle, which includes no animal products

the cheese in the recipe could be substituted with vegan "cheese" that could be made of soy or other stuff, so the person who picked the best answer may have had that in mind....
