Do your dog live in pain....?

Question

Because lots of dogs which are specially bred for their looks are living in pain, according to a special investigation.

Researchers for a BBC programme found the ways some dogs are bred can cause the creatures serious health problems.

They found pugs who couldn't breathe properly, spaniels with brains too big for their skulls and found boxers suffering from fits.

The group who run pedigree dog shows say most dogs are healthy and they're trying to improve the situation.

Oh God!  I saw this on the (Cbeebies) news report earlier.  Made my blood boil.  Pure sensationalism.  I will be watching the programme which I hope will present a more balanced view than this brief report did.  Honestly, for every 1 dog that apparently, allegedly, etc. 'spend their lives in pain', there must be hundreds who live normal happy lives, assuming they get placed in the right home of course.

There will always be breeders who are only in it for the money but again there are also far more who are in it to improve their bloodlines, and thereby, their breed.

Researchers will always find examples of what they are looking for - it's like Opinion Polls.  You can make them look just as you want them to look.  One wonders how many pugs they found that could breath properly, etc.etc.  And one wonders how many of these affected pedigree pups came from Puppy Farms.

Given the cost of a purebred, Breeders, good or otherwise, have to watch their backs more than ever.  In these days of litigation they'd be stupid if they didn't.  

Sorry, I don't contribute to this.  It's just as bad as the gutter press imo.  And it does my BP no good whatsoever - although I will be watching tonight.......

This is mainly an issue with show dogs. People wanting to show their dog will be more bothered about appearance than the dogs health. I have 2 Olde English Bulldogges and both are very healthy because i would never get a dog without seeing both parents with all the papers. Any interbreeding would show up on paperwork anyway.

My two Dobes may be a pain at times, but they certainly don't live in it.

The English Kennel Clubs usual position is to sit firmly on the fence if the issue is contentious.

I have a dog named brewtus and he is half Australian Shepperd and half black lab :) and he suffers from pain in his back legs because he had gotten kicked by a horse wen he was little so his back legs are smaller than his front legs so sad :( but hes very sweet :D

Some dogs who are specially bred for their looks may have certain problems regarding their breed.

For example you have the English and French bulldogs, its common for them to have an elongated soft pallet and so have trouble breathing, plus they aren't able to give birth on their own and need a c-section. There are some breeders who are working together to eliminate some of these problems though and create a new bulldog (I think it's going to be called an Australian Bulldog) who won't have as many problems.

It's a time consuming project but breeders who aren't in it for the money are trying to better their breeds.
