Question:

Does A Deep Cleaning Hurt?

I haven't been to the dentist in two years until a few weeks ago and I received a checkup. In the checkup, they decided that I needed two root canals, to which temporaries and a permanent crown would be placed. So I had the root canals and it was fine, no pain, really. Last Thursday I had the temporaries on and, while the gums were sore afterwards, the pain went away after a nap that day. Now on Thursday, I'm due for the permanents and deep cleaning. But will the deep cleaning cause me pain? Is it any worse or better than what I've had already? Do I need to be numb, will I be able to eat normally the next day, where I'm scheduled for a dinner appointment?

Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  1. Deep cleanings can be a little uncomfortable but nothing that causes excrutiating pain...you may want to rinse with warm salt water after the cleaning to help with sensitivity but other than that you will should be fine.   Oh and you can always try to have your cleaning done with no anesthia and if it gets too uncomfortable you can always ask the dentist to numb you up!!  Good Luck if you had 2 rootcanals this will be a breeze!

  2. Normally, the dentist numbs a patient before performing the deep cleaning. You shouldn't feel much during the appointment, but your gums will most likely be pretty sore after the numbness wears off. Ibuprofen is a anti-inflammatory that will help if your gums feel swollen, and swishing with warm salt water will help soothe your gums.

  3. I think they will "numb" you. If you feel pain TELL the doctor. I would want to be numbed.

  4. It depends on the dentist. If you feel you have a good caring dentist, I wouldn't worry about it. If you're going to western dental though, I'd say s***w it! Don't ever go there! ... you could always ask for the pink numbing  stuff rubbed on first (not the shot) :>
