  1. Work Description: Highly variable. Microbiologists are employed in various fields including food safety, research laboratories, medical laboratories, product testing, etc.

High School: Courses vary with country/state/province but in general you will need senior courses in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics (calculus, algebra or finite).

College (diploma granting): variety of courses. General Biology, General Chemistry, Microbiology (several), Genetics, Statistics, Instrumentation, Laboratory Methods (at college you usually take several of these, each teaching different techniques).

University (degree granting): variety of courses usually including General Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Introductory Ecology, Introductory Genetics, Genetics of Microorganisms, Cell Biology, Immunology, Introductory Microbiology, Advanced Microbiology, Scientific Methods, Virology, Calculus, Statistics, etc.

Education needed: To work as a laboratory technician a college diploma or above is required. Any job where you will supervise the work of others, or have intellectual input into what you are doing, you will need a degree.

Employers: Local Boards of Health, Hospitals, Medical Laboratories, Universities, Food Labs, Breweries, Research Institutes, Food Producers, etc.

Salary will vary with country, education, experience. I live in Canada. The starting wage for a microbiologist here will vary from $25,000 to $50,000 depending on the job and education.
