Does anyone know this book?

a few years ago i vaguely remember reading this book where all the adults in the world (it sounds c**p but it was quite amazing) somehow had a switch flicked in their brains and they because zombies/monsters... this leads to groups of teenagers grouping together and creating their own 'tribes'. I can remember some pretty gritty details about kids being forced to run to the top of a tower with a bomb strapped to them; if they made it there on time and got back they got to survive...if not....well.

it was rife with religious symbolism and a theory about how God was indeed a part of the conscience until humans developed more complexed minds, hence the fact that God was something people still find so easy to believe.

It had one of those typical names (e.g. rivers of blood, etc)

any help would be appreciated but i know it's probably a long sot.
