Does light have properties of mass

E=MC2 states that energy and mass are the same. so does that mean that evergy such as light have volume and density and other propeties that mass has. i asked my science teacher since you can see light does that mean it has volume and density and she said no because it is an energy. but recently i found that E=MC2 means that energy and mass are the same thing. i found this out from the science channel.

IF YOU LIKE THIS QUESTION AN EVEN BETTER QUESTION I HAVE IS IN ANOTHER AREA OF YAHOO ANSWERS. I SUGEST U GO TO A QUESTION I CALLED THEORY OR CYCLE EXISTANCE. I TELL YOU MY THEORY IS GENIUS.

  1. Strictly speaking no. The general scientific community does not accept the concept that light photons have “Rest mass”, which is what you’re talking about, however the issue over “Relativistic Mass”, is still debated to this day. While light photons do not possess Rest mass, they do have momentum and are able to transfer that momentum via kinetic impact to a body, with rest mass.

  2. Mass doesn't necessarily have volume.

    There are two properties of mass--gravitational and inertial.  All energy (including light) couples to gravity and has inertia, so the answer to your question is yes.  Even though light has no mass (meaning its energy at rest, which it never is), it has energy, so if you put it in a box, the box would have more mass.

  3. Light has a dual nature. It is made up of Photons whose mass is negligible. Therefore, light is considered to be massless

  4. well i found the questiion interesting

    if you want to determine existaance of quantities,you just put them in a suitable formula

    ex.

    e=mc^2

    for light e exists so m also.

    if m is not=0

    so not v & d (d=m/v)

    that means LIGHT HAS VOLUME AS WELL AS DENSITY..

    Let me also tell you that it has infinite EFFECTIVE mass (the mass of the medium)

    so to mistress bekki, i would like to tell that if light is inside a box,the mass won't increase because it is constant.We can consider the situation as though the box is no more filled with air rather just waves !

  5. Light is not pure energy.  Light is made up of photons which you could think of as packets of energy with wave-like properties.  So you could think of light as something that has properties of both mass and waves.
