Does she need insurance?

My close friend is 19 and finally getting her drivers license. But, she doesn't have a car to drive. Even if she doesn't have her own car, and she doesn't drive any of the family vehicles (she is in college far away), does she still need to have insurance in some form? We live in Texas.

  1. Yes, she needs to be added to her parents policy as an occasional operator (she still needs to be covered when she is home for summer & winter break).  Most companies give an "away at school" credit if she is over 100 miles away from home without a vehicle.  What this will do is give her the adult (female over 25) rate & her parents policy would go up minimally if at all.  This would give her coverage if she ever needed to borrow a friend's vehicle (NOT any vehicle that is provided or available for her regular use - so she has to be careful not to have "anytime" permission to use another car) and she had an accident & they have low limits, her parent's policy could be called in to pay additional liability.

She could get a nonowners policy, but they are expensive & also would not cover any vehicle provided or available for her regular use so, it is best & cheapest to be on her parent's policy.

  2. It depends on the insurance company that her parents have on their car.  Some insurance companies require teens to have insurance whether or not they have a license.  If she plans on driving, check with the owners' vehicle insurance to see whether she is covered while she is driving that car.

  3. No.  Insurance goes with cars, not drivers.  No car, no need for car insurance.

  4. It Sounds like you are really screwed up by this problem. Hope you could get good luck here.http://car-insurance.bestips.info/car-in...

  5. Your friend's parents should  add her to their policy, as required, as she is still a finanical dependent.  This would protect her should she be involved in an  accident where there was a serious injury.

Most insurance companies require that all "licensed" drivers be added to the policy whethere  they have a vehicle they are regulary driving  or not as the risk is still there.   If not, the insurance company has a right to backdate the policy and collect the premium they were due in the first place.

  6. No. She does not need to have auto insurance if she does not have a vehicle.

  7. No, she doesn't.  Only the people who own a car needs insurance.  If she happen to drive her parents' car and end up in some kink of traffic accident, it always the car's owner's insurance that take care of the issue (collision, at fault or not....etc.)
