  1. Not for a lousy golfer like me, but I'm sure Tiger Woods and other pro's can tell one ball from another.

  2. Yes the golf ball matters.  You want a ball with a higher spin rate.  You won't get the distance a pro gets off the tee unless you can create that kind of clubhead speed, but you can definitely get the kind of spin around the greens.  I do anyway.

  3. Well it does.

The makeup of the golfball can determine distance, speed, and height. Getting a lousy golf ball can ruin a game (I would know)

  4. If you can hit the ball square, yes it does.  If you hack it all over the place, it won't matter much.  That's not to say a ball will turn a good player great or anything, but it could mean the difference on a close shot.

  5. It all depends on how good the golfer is.  If you're an average golfer, who loses a couple balls when you play...  it's not worth it to waste money on the name brand really nice balls.  Just buy a big bag of used ones, like 100 for $30.

  6. For the pros, definitely.  For the rest of us, we can shot 110 with a Titleist Pro V1 or a Top-Flite X-Out from Wal-Mart just the same.

  7. Not for the Average Golfer.  Better golfers with high clubhead speed and the ability to control the launch angle will see the real benefits of current ball technology.  I look forward to the day of a uniform ball and a rollback on outright distance.  7000+ yard courses take too long to play a round for less skilled golfers.

  8. Yes.  You need to find what ball feels right for you.  Try a bunch of different ones.  If you find one that feels right, stick with that one if you can

  9. yes. the get get what you pay. if your a hack then it wouldn't but if your below a 15 handicap then it will have a difference

  10. Try a Callaway Warbird and a Titleist NXT Tour together.  There's a big difference around the green.  Hit one and then the other from various distances around the green and decide what feel you like better.  The Warbird is a low-spin hard ball.  The NXT is softer and spins more.  They will both act very differenty.  It depends on what you like.

  11. yes

the dimples create a diferent ball flight and spin

You should find a ball that promotes backspin feel and little side spin

  12. It matters.  Every make of ball has different characteristics and travels different distances with different spin.

The number one thing sought by golfers of all skill levels is consistency.  By choosing one model of ball, you can reduce a variable immediately.  Conversely, by changing your ball, you can take hit the ball the same exact way, twice in a row, with different results.

For example, if you hit a top flite xl with your 7 iron, it may carry an average of 150 yards with 15 yards of roll.  If you hit a Callaway HX Tour, that same swing may carry 135 with 5 yards of roll.

It would be hard to get consistent, no?

The moral of the story is...

pick a model of ball and stick with it, unless you have a reason to change.  It doesnt really matter if it is $12 a dozen, or $60.  Just pick one!

  13. no I prefer playing with out a ball.

  14. The ball does make a differnce. This biggest one I guess would be the compression of the ball. This is how hard (or soft the ball is). The Titleist ProV1's are 100 compression, the ProV1x's are 90 compression and the ball that Tiger uses is 68 compression.

The pro's tend to prefer the softer golf balls as they are more interested in stopping or checking the ball on the greens.

Your normal golfer would tend to go for a harder ball as they are more interested in distance off the tee.

As you get better the quality of the ball you use is an important factor and you tend to be more picky.

  15. Of course it matters. Spin, feel,RPM's, the ball is a BIG deal depending on the quality of player you are.

  16. Yes, it makes a huge difference. You may hit one ball that goes a long way and rolls off the green with your 6 iron, and another that goes 10 yards shorter but sticks when it hits the green. Any golfer that can get the ball in the air and relatively straight with their irons will notice that, and it can make a huge difference in your scores.

Finding a ball that fits your game and then sticking with it so you can be consistent is an important part of the game if you want to shoot your best scores.

  18. Yes, you can't play golf without a golf ball

  19. sure it does, like someone said you wont notice it until your experienced and good enough to. but when that time comes you should try different ones until your happy.

titilest comes off the face of the club quickly and doesnt compress much but still gets the distance, tends to fly higher and settle quickly

top flight-compresses alot and gets the distance in the air if you need it but will not settle quickly. tends to be decently long.

just a few exapmles of the difference. The compression makes a big difference as well.

if its a cold day you should hit a 90 compression ball. Hitting 100 compression in the cold will be like hitting a rock. In heat go with 100. there are many variables for you to check out.
