Dont you hate it when....

Question

Being horse owners...you know how expensive hay is to get and store for your horses...and when its the time of year when everyone is cutting and baling hay..they take the time to grow it,mow it,rake it,and bale it..but after its baled...they leave the big round bales in the feild to rot and mold with no protection,stored in no barns or even covered with tarps! It makes me mad and if I had the money..I would buy alot of large metal buildings and advertise "Barns for rent to store your hay"so they wont be out in a large feild rotting.Today I was driving to the store and passed by a large feild that had( i swear) at least 50 large round bales rotting away.Last year at that same place...the cattle were starving and I was thinking "Gee..I wonder why those poor cows were starving" Well maybe it might have been because the farmers let the hay set in a feild in all weather conditions to rot away!

some people don't grow hay for cattle and animals too eat, but yes I drive past 3 large feilds every day full of hay! and i have thought the same thing, but it's there hey they can do whatever

it's not a hay shortage, but a rise in the gas prices.. the farmers are only chraging more because the fuel to run the equipment to haul and roll or bal the hay.. because there is def no shortage around here..it's almost being wasted we have so much hay people are still selling last years hay!!

if there was at least 50 round bales can you imagine what it would take to transport all these to a shed? alot of hard work... also because of the density they only get a light mould on the outside, not all the way through.....unless the idiots leave it out there for monthes and monthes....then it turns to c**p, and all its good for is mulch. then your right, thats when its a waste.

i don't like it. if there are starving animals out there go give some to animal shelters and stuff so they don't have to buy it and the money they have can go to vet bills and things. but a lot of times that hay is bad and it isn't safe to feed to animals.

No, i dont hate it because i feed my horse on it!

It is turning into haylege so next time you buy haylege, just think how you hate the farmers and what they do with it and dont buy it.

Haylege is more nutritious than hay so it is better for your horse really.

Plus the farmers can make more money out of it than normal hay because of the time it takes to ferment.

We grow hay and the hay that we are growing to sell is cut/bailed/tarped asap so that it is at it's best. Most of the hay I see out rotting in the field was combined brome or something, which some farmers don't use for feeding to animals and actually just bale to clean up off the field. It is probably suitable for eating I guess, just most people are more interested in alfalfa, timothy, etc... But I do see your point. We are mainly grain farmers but we do alot of hay too, and maybe we are pickier than average people because we feed it to our oown animals also, and not just sell it.

I hate it too! It seems like its a huge hurry to get the hay cut( My father in law bales his & other ppls hay) and then it sits in the field. I really hate it when the hay sits for a week & gets rained on because then the person who had it baled gripes because it got wet. Not far from where I live there ae atleast 100 round bales sitting for the second week and they have been rained on.......

lol totally agree...everything about round bales are bad...they should be banned haha...they provide no balanced diet for horses and every horse may not need the same type of hay and it gets critters in there and mold just yuck...lol

Actually, the big round bales can be stored outside with minimal waste.  There is a layer that gets weathered, but when it's used that year, the waste is not too bad.

I still prefer storing inside with NO waste, and will have the lean to done this year so I can.  Also thinking about making a little awning for the round bale feeder, to keep it out of the weather.
