The Reds went on to beat Villa by two goals to one in the game and Downing went on to score the match winning goal of the game.
The winger scored the second goal for his side, which helped the team win by two goals to one and put them through to the semi finals of the tournament.
Downing’s goal was the second that he scored for the team, but proved to be one of the most important goals that he would ever score for the Merseyside club.
Following his twenty million pound move to Liverpool from Aston Villa, the attacker failed to really make a mark for himself at the club.
However, should he continue playing the way he did against Stoke, he could win the fans over at Anfield.
When talking about the game against Stoke and just how it feels to score such an important goal, Downing is quoted to have said: "I'm absolutely delighted. It was a tough game, but the main thing is we got through"
"Now we have another trip to Wembley.”
"I think it's got to be the highlight (of my Liverpool career so far). I've enjoyed some big games, and the (League Cup) final was great.”
"It was a tough game for us, but the way we got the goal, and for me to score at Anfield, was a great feeling and I'm glad it won us the game."
Many believe that Liverpool’s current season has been a rather disappointing one, with the team failing to really break back into the top four.
The Reds did go on and win the Carling Cup this season, but that has not changed the mindset and attitude at the club.
Nonetheless, winning the FA Cup could give the team the boost that they have been looking for and could help them end their season on a high, as opposed to it being another massive let down once again.
It is now going to be a wait to see whether the Merseyside club can claim another trophy this season or not.
