Doxie pregnancy ...?

is it normal for a dog to breath a little hard while she's pregnant. She's not due till another 24 days so she's not going into labor, but I think the babies might be straining her rib cage a little or something. It's not a constant thing, but it still happens now and then. I would take her to the vet, but I can't and I know my mother won't until she knows something is wrong. My mother & my grandmother say that even this happends to people, but is it also normal for dogs?

  1. Difficult to diagnose on line, and dangerous too so with the advice that if you are at all concerned, call your vet ........ dogs can breath harder in late stage pregnancy, especially if they are carrying a load.  Each puppy in my breed can weigh over a pound at birth, so on weight alone, mum is carting around quite a lot extra. This is why they need to be in tip top condition before they are mated, so they are fit to cope with the extra demands of producing puppies.

However first off, is she showing any discharge?  Are you feeding her daily food intake in small meals - she won't have room to take in her normal amount in one go now.  Don't worry unduly, but do keep an eye on her, and if you are concerned do get mum to at least call your vet for advice.  Is this your family's  first litter?  It's pretty scarey, but nature knows best, and probably your mum/gran too, so I'm sure your girl will come through just fine.

  2. Yer yer its completly fine, the vet will say this too so don't worry, just make sure she's drinking enough(expsecialy milk) and her nose is wet and clear.

    Good luck with the pupz!!!!

  3. I am not sure about dogs but it happens in humans closer to delivery date, because of the babies all the internal organs get squeezed up a bit and what ever is eaten is also consumed by the babies so as the delivery time comes closer even little movements tires

  4. yes it is normal s long as its only "A LITTLE" harder.  It may be she is going to have a large litter also. I raise mini doxis myself and yes mine have gotten a lil winded at times. Especially when she had the two litters of 8 pups each!! There is a differance between"Breathing hard" and having "Difficulties breathing". If your dog is only breathing a little harder thats to be expected but if it restricts her normal activitis or causes her to become less active cuz she cant breath than take her to the vet. if she appears to be in distress and cant CATCH her breath than you need to see the vet immediatly but if shes just panting a little harder all is probally normal.  Remember being pregnant is going to cause your dog to change in alot of ways why not try to read up on the subject of pregnancy a little more,do your own research some?  Could have fun in learning more bout the birthing experience GOOD LUCK AND HEALTHY PUPPIES for you
