Question:

Drawing blood then getting shots...?

I have a new kitten, she'll be 8 weeks this Sunday. So I'm going to take her to the Vet soon for her shots. But she's also going to be getting a FIV/FELV test which requires them drawing blood. I know I should be asking my Vet and I will but does anyone know if its bad to draw blood then get her shots all in the same visit? I don't want it to like overload her or something, she's so small (0.8 of a pound) so I don't want it to be too much or something you know?

Thanks!

  1. It will not hurt her at all.  I work in a vets office as a Technician, the test only requires 3 drops of blood, so she will not be getting much of anything taken from her.  Remember that the Vaccines will more than likely make her tired, it is a lot to take in, but who isn't tired after a trip to the doc.  Hope this helps, congrats on your kitten.  :D

Also, if the vet were to have any concerns and thinks it would be better to vaccinate in a week or two, they will tell you.   But ask questions, vets are there to help you and take away any confusion, doubts, or concerns you may have.

  2. It only takes a very small amount of blood for the test and if she is only 8 weeks old they should just be giving one shot, the FVRCP anyway.  Fear not.  Lots of little ones survive this!!!  Take a fecal sample in too for parasite check.
