Hi, i've got a few questions.

1. on the driving test will you get a minor or even a mark if your able to find the bite with just raising the clutch in your car and then pressing the gas once found?

2. When changing down gear for a narrow corner, would you be marked for going round the corner with the gear lever in the correct gear but with the clutch still down?

3. Is it an instant fail if you clip the kerb in one of the reverse exercises or even turning a corner and clipping the kerb not exactly going onto/over the kerb?

Thanks for your time, its appreciated, any other advice would be grateful got my test soon :)

  1. No offence, but you dont seem like you are ready for the test yet. Your instructor should be able to help you with those questions too

  2. 1, answer is no you will not get marked down but it should be the other way round set gas then find bite that way your car is ready to move away soon and your clutch isn't  at the biting point too long wearing it out

2,yes in this situation you would get marked down for keeping clutch down around corner it may be marked as serious its classed as coasting you are free Wheeling you have no control over your car and there is no engine or foot braking available immediately resulting in loss of control of the car

3, its by no means an instant fail if you touch the kerb but it is preferable and safer to avoid the kerb if you can as it damages the tyres and puts pedestrians at risk it also displays more skill to avoid the kerb

    hope this helps you

  3. 1.no.

2.yes this is called coasting, normally you should be clutch-up to keep control of your vehicle.

    3. yes in my experience indicates lack of judgement.

  4. Hi - i like the other answers, it's good to hear other people's opinions. It just goes to prove that people in the same kind of industry having varying ideas of what is "right" and "wrong"! And therefore, your test result will depend a certain amount on WHO your driving examiner is - as well as where you go, who else is on the road, the weather, what mood your examiner is in etc etc etc.....!

1, as far as this is concerned, you should really - be doing both at the same time, increasing the gas as you bring the clutch up, and pulling off without thinking about what to do if your going for your test.

If you bring your clutch up first, and then start adding gas you are putting a lot of strain on the engine BEFORE giving it any power - HIGH risk of you stalling, and if I was your examiner, i would take you to a T junction on a steep hill to see if you stalled or not while trying to emerge holding it on the bite.

2, If the corner is that narrow presumably you would be in 1st, and going extremely slow. Now unless visibility is ZERO and it's down a very steep hill and you are using brake control to go around the corner, you do really need the clutch up - obviously if you need to go extremely slow then you would have to keep it just on the bite - if not, go slow enough on approach so that you can clutch up before you steer.

3, Nope not an instant fail - depends ENTIRELY on the circumstances. I've had people clip the kerb at 40mph on test and still pass and yet I've had another pupil nudge the kerb on a left reverse and fail. Depends on numerous other factors i believe - the better that your general drive is, the more i think you can get away with - if you drive an average drive then clip the kerb i would probably fail you for it thinking you could do with the extra training, however, if you drive as well as i do, then clip the kerb, i would probably pass you but give you a roasting about it at the end and suggest you do some extra training like pass plus.

But that's just MY opinion - that's why YA is so good!
