  1. You want to drive it all the way, except the ferry to Sicily.  Its an awesome drive I have done it a few times. I know that drive is supposed to be #1 on a lot of lists as best/scenic drives in Europe. It may cost a little more in Gas but it will be worth it.  I think Palermo is a little nasty in comparison to Catania, but past Palermo to Trapani, its very nice.

To pass on the ferry you need your american drivers license, (military Id and the Italian translation), or (Civilian an international drivers license).  Keep the rental documents, and the insurance paperwork, it should be a little box on the windshield.  Thats all you need.  If your bringing a pet, like I did, get the veternarian paperwork stating hes got his shots.

Drive down to Reggio Calabria, I always took the coastal road A something.. its just straight south, follow the signs to Reggio Calabria,  Once there you will had towards the port, its confusing so just ask directions, they will tell you the place, there is only one ferry service that goes all the time.

Go there ask how much Quanto Costa?  for me and my friend and the car,  Quanto Casta per me, e lei/lui e anche la machina?"  pay them and then go where they tell you to, to onload.  The trip takes about 1 hour to get there and get off.  From Messina you should take the A-20 towards Palermo, Bagheria, ect.  Its all along the coast.  From here it merges to the A-18 and you take that into Palermo, its a straight shot and you will end up in downtown Palermo.  Thats like 220 KM.

You dont need any stamps, just the paperwork.  You are american, a passport, and drivers license plus italian translation.  If you are a civilian then you need an international drivers license but you can get them at www.AAA.com for 10 bucks.

  2. Hi Tia, You can get the ferry from Naples (Tirrenia or Grandi Traghetti). In August the price is high and my suggestion to you is to travel by ferry, train or air to Palermo and then rent a car in Palermo if you want (you do not need a car if you stay in Palermo). Enjoy your visit, Gio
