Question:

Drop time in freestyle?

If I want to make it to all stars I have to drop around a 1.5 seconds in freestyle. I know my starts are slow, is there anyway I can work on them out of the water? And what else should I do to drop time.

  1. buy a fastskin and work on doing good butterfly kicks underwater(very important)

  2. I think you should work on your starts, and I think you should go to practice more and become betetr. Oh, you should work on your turns too.

  3. before the start you should stretch and get lose

  4. On your starts, you want to jump as out as you can, but not up, just out. Practice jumping, wtih sets like 4x20 High Jumps. Also on your starts, be ready to go, right when the buzzer sounds. And always streamline, keep it tight and behind your ears. Also, have around 4-5 fly kicks, cause on free, you wanna get up and get goin. Hope this helps.

  5. be mentally prepared/ that is not a long time to lose. just kick a little faster!

  6. you can buy stretch bands and use them as if you were pulling in the water (don't actually bring your arms up over your head as you would in your recovery).  wrap the band around a post or something and get in a squatting position facing the post.  with your hands out in front pull back using your shoulders and repeat.  like in this picture.  this will build shoulder strength allowing you to pull faster without sacrificing technique

try other exercises with the bands out of the water also.

there are also bands you can buy to hold you in place while in a pool ( i know you said out of the water).  they wrap around your stomach and you try and swim against it.

  7. be mentally prepared for the race. visualize the race before bed. practice on ground.

    hope this helps

  8. to work out of the water you do freestyle while laying on the ground and use rugs

  9. turns, as well as the start, are critical for this sprint; you can most likely drop 1.5 just by working on turns; however, don't let your guard down regarding technique and remember that you gotta go all out since it's so short, here's where the training comes in because your first stroke should be as fast/strong as your last; if you trained right, remember to accelerate into turns to make the most out of that momentum

    cheers!

  10. work on breathing, turns, pull and kick
