is it true that a Ducati has really poor wiring? Im thinking of picking up a Ducati 748 monoposto w/a salvage title and fix it up.

It's yellow w/bronze frame and rims. I'm going to paint the bodywork flat black.

  1. wiring has been an issue for ducati, but they are MUCH better than they used to be...and WAY better than harley's crappy wiring...

as for open dry clutch, rain will evaporate very fast, lots of heat in a clutch like that...

  2. Get a better job Magz and you to can have a Harley.

  3. magz, where does that come from.... crapping on harley wiring... yes, you hate harley... we get that, but where is the crappy wiring from?  a 1974 ironhead maybe.... i've seen more wiring problems on kawasaki and yamaha than anything

  4. I don't believe it to be poor wiring, more like nightmare wiring. Every wire is the same color, white if I remember right.  I don't know if they still do this with the newer models.  Grab yourself a wiring diagram and a test light and have fun.

open clutch cover on a dry clutch is a must.

  5. I've been riding Duc's for over 10 years, and really haven't seen or heard of crappy wiring. I was a H-D owner prior to going Italian, and my Hog's always had some problems. Given, I agree the newer bikes are better, but then again, an American motorcycle using alot of Japanese parts?  At least I know that I don't have any made in japan or made in china parts on my Duc! Plus they are lovingly handbuilt one-at-a-time, using Italian & some German parts. There isn't much wiring on a bike to begin with and any competent mechanic can surely fix any issues.

BTW- An open clutch cover on a DRY clutch, (non-oil bath), won't hurt it. Rather it will prolong the life, by letting out the heat. It also will let out the wonderful distinctive Ducati mechanical clutch sound. Carbon Fiber Termi's are the way to go. Just make sure that your ECU was also changed and that the bike is tuned for the open exhaust. They reduce weight by 40 lbs over the stock pipes, make beautiful sounds and opens up the breathing, giving more ponies.  I'd also install the K&N open air-filter, and remove the smog plumbing, add a K&N mini air filter over the oil breather valve in the crankcase, and you're all set.
