Question:

Dvd compatibility?

The DVDs I burn on my computer don't work on my regular DVD players.

I have 2 different DVD players and have tried my friend's DVD players.

My burned DVDs only seem to work well on computers.

How can I make a DVD that will play on all DVD players?

  1. Today, writable CD drives (CD burners) are standard equipment in new PCs. CD burners "burn" microscopic areas of CD-R discs to record a digital pattern of reflective and non-reflective areas that can be read by a standard CD player. Since the data must be accurately encoded on such a small scale, the burning system must be extremely precise. The write laser is more powerful than the read laser,  It alters the surface instead of just bouncing light off it. In order to make the information accessible to another CD drive (or player), it has to be encoded in an understandable form.

All that techie stuff said here are a few solutions:

Your CD player might not be able to play the CD for several reasons, including the following:

    • It can't play data CDs.

    • It can't play data CDs that haven't been finalized.  When you burn a CD, does the Player "finalize" or "close" the disc?

    • It can play data CDs, but can't play the type of files on the disc (for example, WMA files).

    • It can play data CDs, but can't play protected files (for example, a file you purchased from an online store).

    • It can play data CDs, but can't play the particular brand or type (for example, CD-RW) of disc that you used.

You can try one of the following solutions:

    • Burn an audio CD (not a data CD) on CD-R (not CD-RW) media.

    • Burn a data CD that only includes MP3 files. If all of your songs are in the WMA format, you’ll need to use another program to convert them to the MP3 format first, and then add the new files to your Player library. To find an audio conversion program, try searching the web for “wma mp3 file converter."

    • Use another provider's CD burning or authoring program to burn a finalized data CD.
