Dvd upconvert?

Question

I have a high def tv with an older and at that time very expensive dvd player with progressive scan. I am waiting for the blue ray/hd to be settled. will an upconvert dvd really help my pix quality. i am looking at one very inexpensive with no progressive scan ability. thanks

DVD upconverter is OK, but not great.  Get yourself a PlayStation 3 - you get hi def games and a blu-ray player with up conversion.  The battle between HD-DVD and blu-ray is all but over.  Only two studio's left on the HD-DVD side and they are about to slash the prices on the players in a desperate attempt to survive.

I had the a similar situation, and i bought an upconverting dvd player (lower end $70) and while the picture quality is much better than the standard one, it's not so great.  my old dvd player wasn't progressive scan so it's kind of a difficult comparrison.  For the price, it was worth it to me especially since I see the next generation formats (hd-dvd and blu-ray) as being too far out to consider right now.

It all depends on the capability of your TV's processors. THe upconverting DVD player doesn't do anything different from what your TV already does. If you feed in a non-upconverted signal, your TV will upconvert it. THe question is, which does the better job, your TV or the DVD player. THere are upconverting DVD players in the $300 and uop range that do a better job than most TVs. I watch my DVDs using a standard DVD player, and the picture is very good. A $90 player isn't going to do a better job than my TV. Whether it would improve your picture, I can't say. By the way, you should not use an upconverting DVD player that is set to a resolution that is greater than your TV's native resolution.

HD-DVD players are as cheap as upconvert dvd players and play HDDVDs.  They also go up to 1080p (progressive) so why not get one, if you don't want to pay $500 for a 1080p BluRay player?

I don't know what some people are watching but standard dvds upconverted to 1080/24p look just as good as HD DVD or BluRay.
