Primary succession is described as the establishment of plants on new land where no soil or vegetative life existed previously. How would life begin on such a piece of land and then progress into the next stage?

The area is first colonized by algae, bacteria, protists, etc.  When these things die, organic matter builds up and eventual a soil layer forms.  After a long time vascular plants can start developing and so on.
