EMBARGO AND ECONOMIC SANCTIONS??

hi , i need help in gathering information about why UN imposes economic sanctions on a country? What products or markets do they target, and how can a country protect its economy from such economic sanctions??

Generally someone proposes a measure and they vote on it.  In the past they imposed sanctions on Iraq because of his invasion of Kuwait and use of poison gas on his own people.  They target everything except food  and medicine.  Iraq had a oil for food program where they were only allowed to sell oil in exchange for food.
