Early Railroad history help?

I need to know, if in 1865 US, if trains carried passengers. And what states are included?

I can't find no info on these 2 questions.

  1. Yes, railroads certainly carried passengers in 1865.  They'd been doing so since the 1830's and were instrumental in carrying troops during the Civil War.

    I found a site with a railroad map from 1865.  It's pretty safe to say that whatever rail lines existed in that year would carry passengers.  That was the fastest method of transportation around in those days.

  2. Yes there was passanger service back then but what states would be something to search for in a library.

  3. Rail passenger service in the USA began in the 1830s.  The first was on the Baltimore and Ohio RR.  The idea quickly took hold on a national scale, and rail passenger service had spread all over the Northeast and the South by the beginning of the Civil War.

    Try an internet or library search on "first passenger rail service" or "baltimore and ohio railroad."  That should get you started.
