Earth Hour: .....?

Okay. I am a total environmentalist. I do my bit for the planet all the time, i recycle, i save as much energy as i can, i try not to waste anything....Generally i really care about our wonderful planet (without being too obsessed :D) But i need some consolation, people. Sure, Earth hour has saved some energy, wow that is so Good, i'm glad people have woken up at last (i'm sure too many were awake) but turning off your lights for an hour: is that really going to make a difference to the planet just for an Hour?! We'd all probably waste (or use) as much as we saved by the end of a month, maybe even less. I thought this earth hour was only using the energy you specifically needed and turning everything else off. Just give me some consolation, someone, without being too bland! :D

  1. Earth Hour was a PR stunt to make a Canadian Gov't official feel special.

My gut feeling is that earth hour was a net user of energy. Shutting off a light bulb for 1 hour saved a minimal amount of energy. However, knowing human nature, I bet nobody sat in a dark room for an hour. I'm sure some made it a "special" event - a romantic dinner, a party with friends, etc. I'm sure this extra activity consumed more energy (purchasing all those extra candles, etc) than it saved.

If you really want to be serious about saving energy, create a punitive energy tax. It will wreck the economy, but save energy.

  2. like......TOTALLY... lol i saw you writing this! *feels special* *hand thing*

  3. turning off your lights did not save much power but it will get people thinking about those little things you can do like turning off things at the power point. earth hour will also help show politicians that people care about global warming and that they will need to change there polices accordingly.

  4. Hi, the idea was not that one hour of switching off lights would result in any real saving for the environment, but more that people would learn from the experience that energy saving is easy and can be fun.

The event is a extremely valuable education tool which can instill in people the feeling that one person can make an impact, and through encouraging your family and your community to take part, small actions can make a big difference.

I believe that this type of event would be most valuable for children of primary school age. They will likely remember the experience as a fun and exciting time, perhaps with the whole family coming together at the dinner table with only candlelight and each other for company which some of them may have never experienced before. It will demonstrate to them first hand that you can have an enjoyable time without having to consume resources, and remind people that we can take the most pleasure from each other’s company in the evening rather than through watching television, using the computer or other individual activities.

  5. Earth Hour was great.  I switched off all my lights and I couldn't see the clock.  Didn't want to cave in early, so I just went to sleep.  Woke up in the morning, lying on the kitchen floor and realized that I had just unwittingly participated in Earth 12 Hours.

  6. that is great of you to do

it made a difference though very little. it helps the environment by reducing the use of electricity though i guess it is not the solution since our consumption is unstoppable. Just imagine just an hour people were asked to stop using electricity, do you think everyone did that. NO. just an hour and not everyone supported and we can't blame them. We just can't last long without using electricity. Us humans just have to use alternative energy sources, though completely replacing powerplants with windmills, and other environmentally friendly energy sources is tough and needs and costs a lot.

  7. Hi     S. HEY HOW IS YOU NOW MAKE ME BEST ANSWER OR YOU WILL DIE.... me best bud... Lol.     x

  8. ya, i guess we may have saved something for having the stuff off for the hour, but the bigger picture is all of the attention that it has drawn worldwide about climate change and energy awareness.

you cannot beat the free publicity that this has generated in hoping to have people rethink the way they consume energy

  9. Earth Hour is an invitation to a disaster!

Electrical grid authorities try to predict the energy consumption rate many hours in advance so they know how many nuclear generators to have online. These units take days to power up and down and cannot respond to sudden changes without emergency procedures. This can require weeks to place them back into operation after an emergency shutdown.

What happens is, the nuclear generators are set to the minimum anticipated load and the peaks for the day are handled by coal, petroleum and other dirty fuels that leave large carbon deposits into our atmosphere.

If a large power demand dip is expected, as the "Earth Hour" eco terrorists would like, some nuclear generators will be shut down for a day ahead and dirty fuels will take their places **all day** that can respond at a few minutes notice.

This Earth Hour foolishness is one of the worst and foolish acts people, ignorant of electrical energy systems, can rally. Perhaps criminal charges should be concocted to silence the leaders of this foolishness. After all this is an irresponsible act nothing short of an eco criminal behaviour.

Look at the stats. It failed and if the truth be known, from people in the know, increased the carbon emmisions in areas with predominantly nuclear and cleaner energy sources

  10. I received an text message last saturday regarding the Earth Hour and for my part this is good but not enough! why?? Instead of doing this, we should tell instead the Americans and the Chinese to put a halt on releasing the gas emissions for one reason, because they are the two biggest polluters in our planet today according to what Albert Gore said and they must stop blaming each other and do something in order that we may prevent global warming as well
