Education Issues in today?

Of all the current issues which do you think will be the biggest for state an local schools? Why? What will you do to address it?

Increasing ethnic, non-English speaking populations. ESL is affecting more states and requires educational intervention at all levels, in all subjects. Added to that, many non-English populations also have high levels of poverty and associated cultural problems (health, substance abuse, domestic violence, gang activity). Schools will have to be PROACTIVE in identifying at-risk populations and providing additional early intervention and support for academic achievement. Examples: community liasons, hiring teachers who speak other languages, expanding afterschool, preschool, and ESL programs. Expanding feeding programs and summer programs. Coordinating with local service agencies. And all this will hit in tough economic times iwth reduced budgets. The more schools can get ahead of the problems, the better results in the shortest amount of time.
