Hi. My auntie who has two kids already at 2 and a half and 18 months went for a scan as she is pregnant. the scan was her 20 week one but she is 23 weeks and they got the consultant to come and look and the baby a girl has edwards syndrome. so they gave her a tablet at her scan on monday as they are inducing her. she went into hospital early this morning to stay in as long as it takes. they are giving her a private room to have the baby in but as soon as she has had it she has to go on the normal ward with all the new mums. Do you think this is fair and also does anyone know what edwards syndrome is i tried to look it up but im not sure about it. thanks

  1. To carry on to full term the outlook for the little girl would not good im afraid.  A colleague lost her grandchild to Edwards syndrome.

Try to remember that the extra special babies are too good for this world.

Im sure the location of the wards etc will change once your aunt has given birth, they rarely put new mums & mums who have lost babies, have seriously ill babies together.   Its probably just a formality.

Warm thoughts to your & aunt & all your family.

  2. children with Edwards syndrome rarely live but some do. I suppose it all depends how severe it is.Each  child is affected in a different way.Your aunt has chosen to terminate the pregnancy and that must have been a hard decision.sadly it's quite common to be put on a regular post natal ward after a termination, miscarriage or stillbirth...if she's feeling ok physically she could discharge herself after delivery.. She will i assume be given sometime in the private room to share some time with her little girl

  3. Sadly edwards syndrom is fatal condition. Your Aunt is having her pregnancy terminated so early because to continue with the pregnancy would be far to painful. The baby will most likely pass away within minute of being born. babies with this terrible condition have massive defects and many of them affect the bodies vital organs.

I am sure that whe will be not be placed in the same ward as women who have just delivered. I had a 2nd trimester miscarraige and I was put in a different ward to that of women who have had normal births. Our thought are with your family during this difficult time.

  4. Here are some links about Edwards syndrome:

The baby has a third copy of chromosome 18.  When a person gets an extra chromosome or two, it causes many birth defects.  In the case of Edwards syndrome, these are usually lethal.

    My condolences to your aunt.
