  1. It's different everywhere you go. My advice is to be confident, and before tryouts, get warmed up. don't strain yourself, but work your arm, distance is impressive, and so is speed, but accuracy is most important. At my school you are tested on throwing, fielding, and hitting. (that includes bunting!) if you are tested inside, watch in case the ball takes a bad bounce on the hard floor, if outside, watch for changes in the ground, you don't want to take a ball to the head! Keep your butt down while fielding, glove on the ground for grounders, (balls on the ground, obviously) and your hand over the glove to stop the ball just incase. work on your pop flies too (balls high in the air). watch the other girls and learn from them. Or get together with some other girls trying out and have a practice session. Most important, and corny, have fun!

  2. Many HS teams take all that try out. There are some which will have too many girls try out, thus have to make "cuts".

Don't expect to make the varsity, and don't be intimidated by girls who have been playing for a while.

The first thing a coach wants to see is a great attitude, and lots of hustle. Listen, follow instructions and do all the coach asks. Be the first on the field, be the first in line, be the first to volunteer for drills and so on.

As a former coach myself, I would rather have a girl who is willing to learn than one who is a great player, but not "coachable".

All tryouts are a bit different. You can ask some current players what your teams will be like, but it really won't matter. If youv'e never played before, you are not going to learn overnight, so you won't have a lot of skills to impress anyone with. You do have an ability to hustle, and show a desire to learn. You can even ask the coach for some extra practice (if that is allowed in your state), or at least ask after each practice "Coach, what can I do on my own to improve?" That will show you have a desire to be the best you can. That will win you a spot on the team.

Once you've earned the spot, do all that same stuff to keep it! Good Luck, and have fun!
