what are some good brands for electric guitars?

If you are just starting I would suggest buying a pack. It includes everything you would need for a cheap price. It's also not a great financial loss if you decide that the guitar isn't for you. Ibanez makes some good starting packs. Stay away from squire starting packs.

Gibsons are great!  Make sure you purchase a whammy bar and some Humbucker pickups.  Also, buy the same set of stomp boxes used by David Gilmour.   It includes the distortion, fuzz, overdrive, chorus, reverberation, wah-wah, flanging, phaser or pitch shifting pedals, if that makes any sense to you.
