do they exist? if so, what are they about? do they sub. for gas? and what cars were invented that use electricity?

  1. OK, here is the real answer......politics....... money is power or they think it is, we the people have to take a stand. i have no idea how people are going to work and heat family homes this winter, let alone eat.

    electric vehicles take less, use less and pollute less. they have fewer parts to break and are easy er on the environment, DONT LET THEM KID YA, the government is making a ton of money, and the rich are getting richer.

  3. The only true electric car that is able to be driven on the highway is the Tesla Roadster. This electric sports-car can go 125 mph and has a range of about 225 mile. The company is promising a less expensive sedan in the next year though because currently the car costs $100,000. And comparatively that is pretty cheap i guess because it has better accretion than a Porsche. www.teslamotors.com. Another electric car company is Zap motors (www.zapworld.com) which has a few concept cars. So they do exist and are coming.

    Compared to gasoline powered internal combusion engines, they are inefficient.  Batteries are heavy and have a short range.

    They are not much of a solution to the energy crisis, since electricity has to be made from some fuel anyway.

  5. Electric cars have existed since the dawn of automobiles. In fact, many of the early cars were electric. Gas was soon seen as a better fuel, so electric fell out until the 90s. Then a few cars were made, but soon killed. Viable, modern, electric cars are just around the corner. Chevrolet is expecting to release the Volt by 2010. It is supposed to be around $30,000 base. It will have a small flex-fuel gasoline engine for under-way recharging. However, the electric charge is supposed to last about 40-50 miles (about the average commute). When the driver gets home, he plugs the car in to be charged for the next day. That is how many modern electric cars will work.

    The biggest problem that I see right now, is that the ones that are affordable to lower or middle class incomes, is that they operate as minimum speeds, 25 miles an hour and have a very low operating range.

    While the ones that operate at Highway speeds, still do not have an operation range to take long trips.

    however if one could afford one of the mid priced cars available, and

    $20k to $25k in solar panel, in an area with sufficient sun shine, they could commute almost for free.

  7. we've had electric cars as long as we've had gasoline cars & longer than diesel cars & trucks.

    there fine if you only drive 25 miles from home & dont mind taking an hour to drive there & an hour back.

    the tesla roadster uses 1000 pounds of standard cell phone battery's & has the same number of discharge/recharge cycles as your cell phone before the 1000lb of batterys have to be replaced.

  8. Chevrolet are releasing an electrically powered plug-in hybrid car in the year 2010. The electric motors charge gives it a range of about 40 miles. But the vehicle is also equipped with a small 3 cylinder internal combustion engine to recharge the batteries when needed, like a generator. So with the use of the internal combustion engine to recharge the engine, it's range is extended to approximately 640 miles.

  11. TOKYO - Japan's biggest power company is teaming up with Subaru's parent company to develop environmentally friendly electric vehicles that can travel up to 50 miles on a single charge.

    Fuji Heavy Industries will provide Tokyo Electric Power Co. with 10 vehicles based on its Subaru R1e minicar, and TEPCO will develop a recharger that works in about 15 minutes, the companies said last Friday.

    TEPCO plans to use the new experimental electric vehicles as company cars. If they operate well, TEPCO aims to replace about 3,000 of its company vehicles with electric vehicles as early as 2008, the companies said.

  13. The one EV car I currently have (have 2 vehicles that run on hydrogen also) I converted from a vw bug and is free to charge. As I live completely off the grid all my electricity comes from solar panels and 2 wind generators, which I also built.

    However I did charge up at Costco in Carlsbad California (I actually only drove up there to fill up) if I remember right it was around $2.00

    Not sure if you’re interesting in doing it yourself, but I’d be willing to walk you step by step threw the conversion. I've converted 3 of my own cars (a datsun truck, ford ban, and a vw bug) and a few for neighbors. I've also converted cars to run on hydrogen, ethanol and biodiesel, by far EV is the easiest.

    If you’re interested here’s what it would entitle…

    - The engine compartment is first cleaned out of any gasoline components.

    - Electric components are then installed in exchange.

    - A battery bank is built and incorporated.

    - Existing starter and driving systems are connected.

    - Turn the key, step on the gas pedal sending more energy to the electric motor, & thus more power to the drive system, which in return creates more speed, more acceleration.

    - The system has normal automotive top speeds and acceleration, typical to the vehicle your modifying. If your top speed was 85 mph and your acceleration was 1 mile per min, then this will be what your left with after the conversion.

    The methods are extremely simple, making the process possible for anyone, everyone, ANYWHERE.

    Typical tools, hardware & supplies are used, making access to parts available for all.

    Electric Conversions can be easily accomplished in ANY model vehicle, even tractors, Generators, types of machinery, etc.

    Project lengths range from 1 day to 1 month.

    Advanced DC Motor

    The motor is an 8" Advanced DC series-wound motor. It weighs 107 pounds and is rated at 68 peak horsepower. These motors are available in several sizes.



    Adaptor plate

    The adaptor plate mates the motor to the transmission. It is constructed of 1/2 inch aluminum and is pre-drilled with bolt hole patterns for both the motor and transmission. An aluminum spacer is also used for proper spacing between the shafts of the transmission and motor. Adaptor plates are available for many cars.

    DC Motor Controller

    The controller regulates current going to the motor. It is a solid-state device that uses a pulse width modulator (PWM) that sends short bursts of current to the motor at a rate of 15 kHz. Controllers are available from both Curtis and DCP.

    Potbox (Potentiometer)

    The potbox is a 5K ohm throttle between the controller and the accelerator, similar to the way a sewing machine pedal works. The potbox's lever arm is attached to the existing accelerator cable.

    Main Contactor

    An electric relay that serves the same purpose as the ignition switch in a gas car. When the key is turned to the start position, the contactor closes the circuit to allow current to flow to the controller.

    Circuit Breaker

    A safety device that shuts down power for servicing or during an emergency. The circuit breaker is installed under the hood and can be switched both off and on from the drivers seat with an extension or cable.



    Main Fuse

    The main fuse protect the system from high voltage spikes. A fuse should be installed at each battery box or group of batteries.



    Shunt

    A shunt is placed in series within the wiring as a means to connect meters. Shunts are available in different sizes for both high and low power configurations.

      

    Charger interlock

    A relay that keeps the circuit open so nobody will inadvertantly drive off with the charge cord plugged into the car.



    DC/DC Converter

    The DC/DC converter is similar in function to a gas car's alternator. It charges the 12 volt accessory battery by chopping voltage from the main battery pack down to 13.5 volts.

  14. Yes!! They do, and actually, there was a time when electric cars where more popular than gasoline powered cars (but of course this was nearly 100 years ago when gasoline cars where loud, dirty, smelly, and cumbersome, and before the electric starter). For decades the electric car was surviving only in backyards of weekend tinkerers and hobbyist. Then in the late 90's and early 2000's GM leased a few hundred EV1's in California, and the users loved them as-well-as the people who serviced them (no fuss and no mess!!). That is until the lease was up and they wouldn't allow the lease holders to renew, instead the impounded the cars and crushed them. That is until now! Now electric cars have long ranges and excellent performance. For example, the Tesla roadster can accelerate from 0 to 60mph in 3.9 seconds, it has a top speed of 125mph, a range of 220 miles per charge(Don't worry the average American only drives about 25 miles a day so stop worrying that the battery life will die on you), takes only 3.5 hours to reach a full charge, and it looks AMAZING!
