  1. I don't know if they have them in Australia, but i have a Giant Lite electric bike that I like a lot.  It seems to be more dependable than most other electrics.  I had a Curry before.

A feature I like about the Giant Lite is that it won't go unless you pedal it, so you get more exercise and you use less energy per mile.

Electric bikes are a fun, cheap means of local transportation.  In a suburban area, you can go about half as fast as a car and about twice as fast as a regular bicycle.  The cost to drive several miles is probably five cents or less.

  2. Since you have a pretty low maximum power limit in Oz, be sure to get the most efficient motor and a light weight battery.

add on kits are the way to go in OZ.

A brushless chain drive is the most efficient, cylone and elation are two good ones.  Have too keep it light, so some form of Lithium batteries, maybe NIMH if funds are tight.  Try it set up to help hill climbing on a recumbent with fairing.

    try

    for good advise.

  3. Why?  In the long run, you may be using more fuel and making more pollution after motor, battery, bike extras, and power generation and transmission, than you gain.

Back in the stone age , when I was young, there were still some bicycles around with small engines.  You could peddle them or run them on the engine.  The engine started easily anytime because the bike was moving and acted as the starter.  I think they weren't popular because they were heavy and expensive for the little power they had.  With today's light bikes, they might go over now.

Perhaps after you finally go to clean nuclear power, all electric may be more effective.  Something tells me though, even more Australians are prejudiced against such things than people in the US.
