Question:

Electric steering sucks or what?

Radio display shows "power steering" ............ again on my 2006 Malibu Maxx. This is getting real tedious. Dealer says the code is not being stored and his equipment will not pull it up. I read somewhere that GM is replacing steering columns on US car but my dealer in Canada never heard of it. How can I get this information? Is there something wrong with with the steering columns or not?

  1. Google Chevrolet Malibu recalls and if there are any they should show up.  Electric steering is fairly new technology and there may be some bugs?

  2. It has to have a bad sensor or a wire that is loose and not making a good ground .You should be able to get online and find recalls for GM , if they do have one your local dealershipshould fix you up,it seems like your deal could find out for you as well.

  3. I don’t think there’s an official recall yet.  I certainly haven’t found any info on http://ntsb.gov/ and haven’t received a recall notice in the mail.

I’ve heard of some dealerships (certainly not all) replacing the columns because that’s what they think fixes the problem but I don’t know of any official directive from GM on the subject.
