Electronic Schematics: 51a x*x 51n?

i have been reading a few electronic schematics and trying to really get my head around exactly what is going on in the circuit.

at various times it refers to a waveform or inductor/coil and have a value displayed like this: 505a x*x 505n

the numbers change often but the format is always the same, numerical value-a x*x numerical value-n

what do these values mean?

has no meaning as far as I know; I never saw it before. You need to show me some examples.
