  1. You pull the goalie to get an extra attacker if you want an extra goal. Notice they don't do it if they're 6 goals down because they cant win anyway!

  2. They pull the goalie for the 6th player advantage, you can work the puck better and have a better chance of scoring a goal to either tie up the game to go into over time, or win the game if it is tied. You can only play with six players on the ice at once and that is 3 forwards 2 Defencemen and 1 goalie, if you pull the goalie you can change it up for a forward or D (usually a forward) you want to put your six best shooters and players out there to hold the zone and score a goal!

15 years of playing and 23 of watching hockey!

  3. So the team who is down a goal can get the tying goal to force overtime.  They wouldn't do it if it wasn't a desperate situation that could be prolonged into overtime.

  4. For the extra attacker. They have a 6 on 5 then and it's an advantage.

Now to our next lesson class

    What  is a Powerplay?

  5. they take out the goalie so they can have an extra attacker in the offensive zone...when you are shorthanded it is really hard to get the puck and score so its not really that big of a deal that the net is empty....teams do it when they are down and there is about a minute left to get a goal and maybe take the game into overtime....it works sometimes but most of the time no one scores...sometimes players get empty-net goals

  6. What you saw is a strategy used when a team is losing by 1 or 2 goals near the end of the game, particularly if the puck is in the opposition's end of the rink.

By taking your goalie out they can be substituted by another skater (not in goalie gear) in the hopes of scoring a goal to possibly tie the game.

It is risky because without a goalie, who through training and the use of larger protective equipment has a better chance of stopping a shot should a goal not be scored, the defending team regains posession of the puck and attempts a shot on the "empty net".

  7. I'm going to cut you some slack and assume you're very new to hockey.  At the end of a game when a team is down by a goal or two, they pull the goalie and replace him with an extra attacker.  This turns it from 5-on-5 to 6-on-5, allowing the team to create more scoring chances in order to tie the game.  It's a last ditch effort to try and tie the game.  Losing is losing, so it's worth the risk to go for the tie and risk losing by another goal.

  8. At the last minute if a team is losing the goalie leaves. An extra offensemen comes out so the team with out a goalie has a 1 man advantage.

  9. at the last minute of the game the other team (if they are losing) will pull their goalie to put an extra man on the ice so they have a better chance of getting a goal to tie it up if they are down by one. its a risk taker but sometimes it works other times it doesnt.

  10. They pull their goalie so they'll have an extra attacker.

  11. A team can pull their goalie to add a 6th attacker.

  12. You kinda make us Red Wing fans look stupid.  There is nothing different between losing 2-1 or 3-1, so the team that is losing pulls their goalie and puts an extra player on the ice.  It's kinda like having a powerplay, but instead of 5 on 4, it would 6 on 5.  I guess that would be the simplest way to put it.

  13. you must know nothing about hockey

O.K.  WHEN YOUR DOWN LIKE 1 POINT YOU CAN PULL YOUR GOLIE SO YOU GET SIX MEN ON THE ICE INSTEAD OF FIVE MEN ON THE ICE SO IT IS LIKE A POWER PLAY FOR YOUR TEAM

  14. they need the extra forward more than the goalie cuz they are desperate for the tying goal, so they pull their goalie. thats not stupid.

  15. They do it to add an extra offensman to make a final push for a goal to keep them in the game

  16. they get an extra attacker in exchange for the goalie

  17. lol. hahah how can something you don't understand be stupid. why don't you try to figure out what it is/why it's done/ a reason for the act before you make a determination.

and wow. red wings fan eh?

the goalie gets pulled so that team can have an extra player on ice. it usually happens during the end of the game, like you saw this afternoon, because it was close in points and the redwings wanted the chance to tie and go to ot.

  18. When the team pulls their goalie, it's usually because they want to get an extra player on the ice to score a goal since there is a limit on how many men can be on the ice.
