Endless previews on the DVD?

Question

I am guessing the DVD I rented isn't supposed to loop the previews over and over and over...

Once it gets to the root menu, instead of going to the main menu of the movie, it jumps back to the previews again. Repeatedly. I have tried taking the DVD out and cleaning it with warm soapy water, but no change. Just the same previews again. Any suggestions? My daughter mentioned taking a match and running it over the surface of the DVD but I am afraid I will ruin it if I do that. Any other ideas? The video store is closed so I can't take it back tonight.

Try hitting the >>| button (it may be labled next) to bypass each preview. You should eventually get to the main movie. Some (most?) discs will prevent you skipping the previews (its free advertising for the studios), but you might be lucky.

Have you tried scene selection? Or maybe you can't get there ... my other suggestion is to SKIP or SCAN (not sure which button would work better) through the previews and then maybe that will get you to the start of the movie. Hope this helps!

Does your remote have a "Menu" button on it?  If so, that'll take you to the DVD menu.

Try to switch it in manual mode so that it will not run automatically.
