Energy Supplier?

excuse my ignorance, but when you switch energy supplier, what actually happens? Do you keep the same meter and give them the new reading or what?

Yes, that is what happens but a word of advice.  Check that the meter reading you have given them is the same as that on the first bill.  When I changed they made a mistake and I got a bill for over £1,000.  I did manage to sort it out as it was a mistake but it caused me a lot of stress.

Yes, it all stays the same, your new supplier will ask you for a meter reading, they will send that to your old supplier and you will get a final bill from them.
