  1. Why not ask a career counselor at your school?

  2. Mechanical engineering is very broad - so this depends entirely on what field you choose to move into. You don't say at what level of education, so:

Many excellent undergraduates are making starting salaries in the low to mid $80k by going into the oil industry. These are folks who show great potential in the form of grades, self confidence, and personality. Typical starting salary in commercial industries ranges a bit, usually by responsibility and local cost of living. This can be from 45,000 to 60,000. Aerospace will be at the low end, 45k-55k.

With a masters degree it still depends on the field - you might be offered 45k to 60k if the employer thinks that they can get away with it. (many grad students are visa holders and are willing accept low pay for the benefit of residency which is why companies often make offers to masters candidates in this range) Expect 60k to 70k for typical commercial industries or 80k-90k in oil.
