I am currently working on a 2000 60 degree v-4 FFI E-TEC. Symptoms are engine starts runs out fine but wont restart. We had the ecu sent to DFI electronics and it bench tested ok. While running it in the water with a test wheel @ about 3500rpm the voltage spiked to 16vdc the check engine light with an audible alarm and it killed the engine.Did a resistance check onthe 20v and 40v stator and it checked out ok. I also did cranking voltage output with the crank position disconnected both the 40v, and the 20v did not come up to spec actually less than one volt on all windings and yes i used my dva peak reading adapter on my bluepoint digital multimeter. No fault codes are stored on the evenrude diagnostic software. The engine always restarted for me after cranking it three or four times, but another tech working on it said it wouldent restart. It seems to be some kind of thermal breakdown. Maby the PDP idont know i ran out of time on friday and it is just eating my brain any professinals?

  1. I know this sounds a little over simplified but I experienced a similar prob on a '02 90deg V-6 Evin DI and was able to trace it down to loose/corroded battery cable connections at the battery. You might want to double check there. What I was experiencing was a momentary loss of contact with the battery which spiked the charging output from the ECU triggering a shutdown and setting a "check engine" light and horn.

Make sure the battery is held on with NUTS and electrical contact "star washers".... NO wing-nuts. Clean the contacts and see if that helps.

Hope this help a little. Best of luck... Sounds like a "fun" one.

  2. All of the new DFI, HPDI, LPDI, outboards are very sensative to a defective battery. Check all connections for corrosion. Also the battery needs a load test, not just a voltage test. Also is that an E-TEC or a FICT motor, i didnt think the E-Tecs were out in 2000. Another problem with the FICT motors is the spark plugs have to be indexed. If all else fails get a Yamaha next time.

  3. alternator? lol
