Question:

English Girth size???

I ride my small 14.2hh Paint gelding Western. I use a 30' cinch and it is tightened all the way on both sides and fits him perfect. I recently got an english saddle to try out, but the cinch that came with it was just a pony cinch because that's all the person had to give me. I am ready to order a new one but I'm not sure on the size and my horse isn't around to measure at the moment. Thanks!

  1. I would guess around a 44" - 46" depending on your horse's build.

  2. Our large ponies usually use anywhere from a 44 to a 50, depending on how fat/round they are. If he's more petite, aim for 44. If he's bigger bodied, go toward 50 (or anywhere in between :))

If I were you, I would measure the pony first so you don't get something that doesn't fit.

ADD: Based on the pic, it's still hard to tell, but I would go for a 46 or 48. Better to be a little big than too small to buckle!

  3. Very cute pony!!!

I would get a size 46" girth that has elastic on both sides so it will have more stretch

  4. As you just said - there is no way to tell without measuring. The Western cinch size doesn't really help since Western and English saddles have different attachments. There is even variability between English saddles depending on the billet length.

So, if you want to know what size girth to get, you will have to either wait for your horse to get home and measure him then, or go to where he is and measure him now.

  5. The best way to do it is to take a measuring tape have someone hold it half way up your horses girth line on one side, bring it under and hold it half way up the other side and that should give you the size.

At a guess I would a 44" but i would measure just in case.

  6. I would probably try a 44" girth.... If it is too small you can always buy girth extenders!
