The Spanish International has apparently lost favour of his manager, Brendan Rodgers.
The Ulsterman issued a warning to him and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Stewart-Downing-c34221 to show more commitment, otherwise risk losing their places in the team.
Signed by the Merseyside outfit from Aston Villa last summer, the 28-year old has suffered a beleaguered spell at Anfield so far.
He appeared as a second half substitute in the league matches against Manchester City and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 at Anfield – his only two appearances in EPL games so far this term.
Nonetheless, the short-of-form defender attributed his recent poor performances to fitness problems.
He stated that he has been plagued by a knee injury ever since the start of the season. He first felt it during his side’s opening game against West Bromwich Albion. After the pain went beyond endurance, he took some injections and unravelled that he was
on a path of quick recuperation.
“I don’t know quite what the problem is but I have been playing with a lot of pain,” he told the reporters in an interview.
“I had an injection in my knee so hopefully that will settle it down and allow me to find my form again because it is difficult playing with pain.”
During Enrique’s truancy, Rodgers deployed the 19-year old Andre Wisdom in the left-back position.
Besides that, the Northern Irishman has already altered the position of Downing, involving him in a more defensive role.
Nonetheless, the former Villa player was not fazed at the competition that he now faces for a starting-eleven berth.
Instead, he viewed it as a healthy sign for the team, and revealed that he was relishing the challenge of fighting for his place.
“I enjoy the competition for places. I know when I am fit I can play in this team and I want to play. I’m not really worried about that,” he added.
Enrique then went on to express his dismay over Martin Kelly’s injury, and offered him his best wishes as he undergoes his convalescence process.
