Enrolling in home school late?

I'm about to transition from public school over to home school and I have a few questions.

I have about five weeks left so which home school program would accept me this late in the year?

Also, what would happen with my credits? Would I have to start all over or would they just be turned over to home school and finished there?

I live in Tennessee if that helps.

  1. I don't know why you are leaving with only 5 week left. if I were you I would at least finish out the year.

  2. Hi, congratulations on your decision to homeschool.

There are many options you can use when homeschooling, from homeschool umbrellas schools to purchasing curriculum and studying on your own.

You may want to read this article on homeschool high school:

You can begin and end whenever you want - you dictate how fast or slow you want to go. Don't forget, you will on your own and can work faster than in a regular classroom filled with other students.

Your school may allow you to continue to use your books/textbooks from your school. Talk to the guidance counselor to find out.

But many curriculum options are available, from free to paid. Choose one that you like. You can purchase a course to meet your .5 credit needed and work through that until you are done.

If you go past the 5 weeks that you have left, continue to work at your course until you are complete. Just get it done before next school year if you are going back. Make sure you notify the school that you have completed a course. They may want to see your work. Keep a record of your completed assignments, tests, etc. in a file to show them, if needed.

You can also complete courses over the summer to get ahead and finish school sooner.

Read this article about dual enrollment. You can actually earn college degree while finishing your high school diploma!

How cool is that! Think of the money you will save on college tuition! :)

I have an article on homeschooling in TN and how to find out the requirements for your state. I also personally know the state leader of THEA. THEA has many area homeschool support groups connected together.

    Find it here:

Don't worry about your credits - they will stay with you. Your parents can issue a diploma and create your transcript. You will want to get your current transcript from your high school especially if you are not going back next year.

AOP (Alpha Omega) has some great courses to choose from that you can work on independently. There is a 20% off sale going on right now, which will save you some $$. :)

Hope this helps and many blessings as you begin your homeschool journey. Don't forget to have fun! :)

  3. Is there a way you can get a home tutor through the school on medical leave for the remainder of the year so you wont loose your credits?

If you leave I do not believe you will be able to get credit because you didn't finish the year.

What do you mean start over? It's not really like that in home school you do your work until it's complete then move on. There are other options to school one is a charter online school may let you make up your .5 credit, or depending on your age and your ability to test you may want to think about getting your GED.

  4. If you are going to homeschool, your parents are accepting the responsibility and that's all the acceptance you need.  There is no specific program, it's all up to your family to decide how to go about homeschooling.

You should know what classes you have taken, as far as your credits, the school will maintain a transcript and you can use that and your homeschool transcript together if you ever need one.

If you want to finish the classes you are working on now, you may be able to hang on to your books for a few more weeks and complete them at home.

Get in touch with a local support group or at least a statewide group.  They will make sure you know all the legal issues in TN.

Read "The Teenage Liberation Handbook" by Grace Llewelyn.

    Good luck :D
