In a chemical reaction, the change in enthalpy and the change in entropy are determined by the nature of the compounds involved.

a) What signs of ∆H and ∆S indicate that both factors contribute to a favourable reaction?

b) What signs of ∆H and ∆S indicate that both factors combine to make an unfavourable reaction?

Thank you

  1. a) Delta H Negative Delta S Positive

    b) Delta H Positive Delta S Negative

    Explanation: Gibbs free energy equation

    G= H - TxS

    If G is negative then the reation is favorable

    If G is positive then the reaction is not

    (Temperature is always positive because its in Kelvin)

    so negative H and positive S will give you a favorable reaction and positive H and negative S will give you an unfavorable reaction.

    Hope that helped.
