It all depends on where "local" is.  Different areas have different native species, therefore different customs and uses.  

In the Southeastern US, you can use the Foxfire books as a guide.  You also might want to look at "Stalking the Healthful Herb".  Both of those are good resources.

Go ahead and do the assignment. You need to go outside and actually go outside and look at your plants, or go to a book store. The bookstore and library are great resources. You know like Hoodia Gardonia is suppose to help some people suppress appetite. There are all sorts of stuff that plants can do. You should just research and enjoy doing the project.
