Ethernet port on freesat box?

Why is there an ethernet port on the back of the freesat boxes? It says its for connecting to broadband in the future but what will this connection do???

The BBC, ITV & C4 are planning to access online content with the FreeSat box so you will be able to watch content on BBC iPlayer and 4oD ect.
