  1. A double switch occurs when the manager brings in a new pitcher and a new fielder at the same time on defense. A manager does this when the pitcher's spot in the batting order is coming up when his team goes on offense. By replacing the pitcher and a fielder at the same time, the manager can put the incoming fielder into the outgoing pitcher's spot in the batting order, thereby avoiding having the new pitcher hit soon.

    This is done late in the game in the National League.
