Extracurriculars and Volunteer work?

I am entering my Freshman year in less than a week. I am on Varsity cheer, and my average GPA is 3.8. I am in all Pre-AP courses, and I have my whole class schedule figured out through high school. I participated in Duke TIP and took the SAT as a 7th grader, and I received a score of 1550/2400. I received state recognition for that, and I am in Who's Who. I am also in the Gifted and Talented program. I'm also involved in dance. I am in Who's Who Among Students, and several people have told me I need to be involved in volunteer work and more clubs. What are some of your suggestions?

Also, this year, I will be involved in Foreign Language Club, as well.

  1. I've heard that many colleges look for the quality of extra curricular activities more so then quantity.  If you're not ready to put 100% into everything you have on your plate at the moment, plus more, you might want to think about waiting a couple years before adding more clubs or volunteer work.

Just find something you enjoy.  Pick a couple clubs that look like fun.  You don't have to go to every meeting, unless you want to be an officer for one of them in the upcoming years.  (I guess that contradicts the 100% thing.)  Find out how many meetings/activities a year you have to go to be considered a member of the club and go to the the ones that sound like a good time.

Volunteering is great.  If you find an organization that you feel is a good cause and lets you have fun while helping out, it is one you should do on a regular basis.  Hospitals, animal shelters, and nursing homes will all let you volunteer once a week or more, if you're interested.  You can also look into volunteering at an elementary school nearby as a teacher's aid.  If your school ends up having a volunteer services office, and you don't want to volunteer at one organization on a regular basis, you can stop in there they should have plenty of odd jobs for you to sign up to volunteer at.  Pick the ones that suit you.

  2. You sound smart! Good job for not wasting your life and time like so many airheads do.. i respect you! anyway, if you're into medicine in any way, or atleast not afraid of it, volunteering in a hospital would be a great choice.. i volunteered in a Childrens Hospital, labor and delivery floor, it was great!

  3. Wow you are involved in a lot. I think you're on the right track. Colleges look at a lot of things and everything you have will definitely please them...as long as you do good at them.
