  1. There is a long differential for chronic discharge. If it is truly only in the morning, dry eye and eyelid inflammation, called "blepharitis" can cause this. Artificial tears will help a bit but Ocusoft brand over the counter eyelid scrubbing pads will keep the glands at the base of the lashes very clean, and reduce and eventually eliminate the crusting. These glands, the meibomian glands, can become plugged with oil and debris, and in some patients, cause the problem you describe.  Omega 3 fatty acid taken once a day (fish oil) can help. There are more serious conditions that can cause chronic discharge including allergic conjunctivitis and even chlamydial conjunctivits, a bacterial infection of the eye associated with the sexually transmitted disease, Chlamydia. I would urge you to seek attention from your ophthalmologist.

  2. You have an eye infection and it will continue to get worse until you see an eye doctor.  Do not see a regular physician - go to an eye doctor.  I let it get really bad thinking it would go away when I was younger that I would wake up with my eye sealed by the goop.  See an eye doctor.  It won't cost an arm and a leg.
