  1. Coz some of them contain sap or resin oils that make the sounds, the snapping sound is air pocket in the wood expanding and finally exploding out.etc.....

  2. Most of the crackle and pop comes from little _steam_ explosions, from moisture in the wood, But in "sappy" pines and other conifers, it can come from similar vaporization of other volatile compounds, like terpenes.

  3. The moisture in the wood causes sections to heat up at different rates, and the water expands, splitting the wood.

  4. because the wood expands

  5. Air, trapped water turning to steam, and other gases escaping, causing the wood to split.

  6. There are many possible reasons for this.

One is that heat causes material to expand, and wood is fairly brittle; so as it expands, it crack and breaks. Alternately, it has been known for a while that some woods emit gases whilst burning - well, all woods release CO2 whilst being burnt, as that's the chemical equation - this can eddy around and cause things to shift about a bit, pop and whatever.

The tendency of wood to crack and pop is largely due to how dry it is, although if in the fire for long enough, even soaked wood will dry out and begin to burn.
