  1. Probably somthing to do with the filter.

  2. firstly your tank may bee to small

the minimum for  4 goldfish is 60 gallons

secondly algae eaters need tropical water

  3. its the carbon in your filter i tihnk, it happened to my new tank once and it was horrible, i had to empty it all and clean the whole thing (dont do that cause you have fish in yours, mine was empty) just do it little by little but rinse the carbon bags in old water first.

too everyone who's complaining about how many goldfish per gallon etc:

you can have as many goldfish in a tank as you want as long as you can easily maintain healthy water condition and the fish have plenty of room to swim, you might just have to sell some or upgrade when they get too big.

  4. Did you rinse the activated carbon at all?  Usually, if the water turns black, it's due to the dust from the carbon in the filter.  Simply removing the filter cartridge and rinsing it will remove the dust, and several large water changes will remove it from the tank water.

  5. If your fishtank water is black, then change it.  Just be careful to dechlorinate the new water, and try to disturb the nitrogen cycling bacteria as little as possible.  For me, that means protecting the sponge in my filter from the chlorinated water while it is still untreated.

Regular water changes are vital for a healthy tank, especially with the goldfish you have (goldfish are "poopy" fish that make more waste than other types of fish).  If you don't like how frequently you have to change the water to keep it clean, then you might want to consider upgrading to a larger tank.  Larger tanks have more volume, so the concentration of fish waste per volume builds slower and you can do less frequent water changes.  Your fish will also be more comfortable in a larger tank with cleaner water.

  6. sorry for not answering your question but...FISH MAN IS STUPID...don't listen to him...4 gold fish 60 GALLONS!?
