  1. i think so

  2. the answer is yes.some boxes stay up a few days while others stay up for a week or more. you can get one for 100-200 dollars.even when they godown there is normally a new fix within a day. lots of sites to get the info and fixes.best fta with quickest fixesare satopia, sonysat, captive works, sonicview, viewsat.

  3. The unencrypted channel selection is poor. It may get better in the future though if more people get into FTA. It also requires some knowledge to set up. If you are handy, no problem. Otherwise you'll need someone to install it for you.

You can illegally decrypt some signals but it flakey and you could be without channels for a few days every now and again while you get new encryption keys. It's also illegal.

If you want something that's easy to use and comes with loads of good channels and has tech support included then FTA is not the way to go. If you are tired of paying through the nose, or can't afford it, and don't mind long down times, then FTA is worth a try. It is better than using an over the air antenna.

  4. Every TV and radio is a free to air receiver. Do you have something specific in mind.

I use a HDHomeRun dual digital tuner for my mythTV setup. That works just fine and has done for many months.

Ahh, I see. You mean the free to air satellite downlinks of TV. Not the Free to air DVB-T in europe or the free to air ATSC in the US. Yes, they work fine. I recommend as big a dish as you can get.
