  1. FTP is a File Transfer Protocol and not all free hosting sites allow use of a FTP program, like SmartFTP, to upload/download files.

You don't need to use FTP unless you are making/editing your own web pages on your computer with an HTML Editor.  NotePad is fine if you know how to hand code HTML/CSS.

If you use a paid hosting site or one like the free bravehost.com hosting, you can use FTP.  Otherwise, you will have to use the free hosting site's Uploader Tool.

  2. Here you go. Try the free FileZilla program at http://filezilla-project.org/

A nice way to use FTP through a graphical user interface without needing to know archaic command lines.

  4. I think you might be misunderstanding what ftp actually is. ftp is as the name implies a file transfer protocol for moving files across the internet. Download WinSCP. WinSCP is a program with a nice interface for moving files.

You'll need to know the server address of where you want to move the files. Thats all its really for, just easily moving files. In the left window you'll have your local drive, so anything on your actual computer, your desktop etc.. On the right side is where you'll see what files on the server your connected to.

So say I have a server called, www.myserver.com. And I want to move a WORD document from my pc to that server. I would just open up WinSCP. Navigate to the word document in the left window, right click or drag and drop it into the location on the right window, so it goes where I want it to in the server file system. As an above poster said, its no different than when you right click the start menu in windows and click Explore. You are able to move files around on your local machine that way. FTP just allows you to move stuff for your pc onto a server.

  5. FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol.  As the name implies it is used for moving files around.  You've been doing that with Windows Explorer for some time now I'm sure.  Well there are plenty of programs that make FTP just as simple.  In fact many look and behave just like Windows Explorer.  Almost no FTP knowledge needed!  You'll have to know the server name and how you authenticate (probably using your MySpace username and password).  Just Google "FTP client" or search download.com.  I like FireFTP for Firefox.  Hope that helps!
